My son joined Beaumont Karate-Do when he was 6 years old, my daughter joined the following year. After seeing me at all of the Karate activities with my kids, Sensei Tomashiro (head instructor, 1998-2008) said to me, “Ron, you’re always here anyway, you should train.” So, I joined in 2003. Training and competing with my kids was very fulfilling. The most memorable times were when the three of us were competing together in Team Kata at tournaments. We trained together for eight years before life took the kids on a different path. We had all earned our brown belts by that time. In 2012, at the age of 50, I earned my Sho Dan (1st degree black belt). I followed that up in 2017 by earning my Ni Dan (2nd degree black belt).
What keeps you coming back after all these years? My top three reasons for coming back every year are fitness, stress management, and that I am always learning new things. Even after all this time, I learn something new every class. On top of that, there is the sense of community. The larger Karate community as a whole, and in particular our own dojo, is like a family. There is a strong sense of camaraderie among our club members.
If you had to pick, what is your favorite thing about training in Karate? I find that a real tough question to answer because I enjoy many facets of Karate. If I’m pushed to give a specific answer I would have to say, “it’s what I am working on today, be it a new kata, weapon, or fine tuning some of the basics!”
Another aspect I enjoy is giving back to the dojo. Many people have, and continue to, invest time and energy in helping me to learn more about Karate. Passing these lessons on and helping others learn about Karate has been very rewarding. I believe Karate has allowed me to be the best version of myself.
